What are affirmations and how do they work?

Positive affirmations are uplifting self-statements that utilize the effects of positive psychology and visualization to help us become our best selves.

There are many ways to integrate affirmations into our lives. One way is to meditate to affirmations in a similar way we would practice mindfulness meditation. If you choose to meditate to Selfpause’s affirmation compilations, you’ll want to start by relaxing into a comfortable position, choosing a background track, clearing your mind and closing your eyes.

Visualizing each affirmation as it applies personally to your own life is key to magnifying the efficiency of this practice.  When you hear something like “I am financially secure and successful”, use the momentary pause to imagine what that would look like and feel like in your personal life. Where would you live? How would you feel? What would you do each day?

Studies in Psychology and Neuroscience have demonstrated that the same exact areas in our brain that activate when we see something also activate when we visualize or imagine the same thing. This suggests that real experiences and vividly imagined experiences are almost indifferentiable to the subconscious mind.

Our expectations become our reality. By choosing to feed our subconscious mind with positive and empowering visualized experiences, we can train our subconscious mind to believe the best about our current circumstances and to expect best-case scenarios concerning the future. Our subconscious mind is a co-pilot of our actions, so it’s interpretation of our life manifests into our behaviors and constructs our future circumstances.

Neuro science has taught us that “Neurons that fire together wire together”, so by visualizing what success will look like for you, you are creating habitual thought pathways in your brain that will keep your goals top of mind and remind you to take action with opportunities that bring you closer to accomplishing your goals.
