Our verdict
Insight Timer offers more free meditation content than anyone, full stop. Tens of thousands of free guided sessions from thousands of teachers make it the best value in the category. The trade-off is curation: it can feel like a library with no librarian. For self-directed meditators, it is unbeatable.
This review is editorial and unsponsored — no affiliate payments influence our ratings. Selfpause makes a wellness app of its own, so where a product competes with us, we say so plainly and let you judge.
Insight Timer took the opposite approach to Calm and Headspace. Instead of a polished, paid, single-voice product, it built an open platform where thousands of teachers publish guided meditations — most of them free.
The result is a genuinely staggering library: well over a hundred thousand free guided meditations spanning mindfulness, sleep, anxiety, spirituality, and more, plus a famous customizable meditation timer with interval bells.
What you trade for that abundance is curation. There is so much that finding the right session can be a project in itself, and quality varies between teachers. But if you are willing to explore, no app gives you more without asking for a cent.
Pros & cons
What we like
- The largest free library anywhere — tens of thousands of free guided meditations.
- Thousands of teachers and styles, from secular mindfulness to spiritual traditions.
- Excellent free meditation timer with customizable interval bells for unguided practice.
- Strong community features — groups, live events, and milestones.
- Member Plus is cheaper than Calm or Headspace if you do choose to upgrade.
What we don’t
- Discovery is hard — the sheer volume can be overwhelming without curation.
- Quality varies between teachers since anyone can publish.
- Courses and some advanced features sit behind Member Plus.
- Less hand-holding for total beginners than Headspace.

What Insight Timer is
Insight Timer is a meditation platform built around a massive, mostly free library contributed by thousands of independent teachers, plus a customizable timer for unguided sitting.
It is best understood as the open, community-driven alternative to the polished subscription apps — abundance and variety over tight curation.
Why Insight Timer wins on value
Because teachers publish directly, the free catalog is effectively bottomless. You can meditate daily for years and never run out of new material without paying.
That matters because cost is the main reason people abandon meditation apps. Insight Timer removes that barrier entirely — the only thing it asks of you is the willingness to explore.
The free guided library
Tens of thousands of free guided meditations across nearly every topic and style imaginable.
No other app comes close on free breadth. If you like sampling different teachers and approaches, this is the whole reason to be here.
The meditation timer
A highly customizable timer with interval bells and ambient sounds for unguided practice.
It is the feature that gave the app its name and remains the best free tool for experienced meditators who do not want narration.
Where Insight Timer falls behind
Guided structure. Beginners get less of a clear path than in Headspace.
Curation. The volume is a blessing and a curse — finding the right session takes effort.
Consistency. Quality differs between teachers in a way it never does in single-voice apps.
Insight Timer vs. Calm vs. Headspace
Insight Timer is the free megastore, Calm is the sleep specialist, and Headspace is the structured teacher.
Pick Insight Timer if value and variety matter most and you are happy to self-direct. Pick Headspace if you need teaching. Pick Calm if sleep is the point.
A smart play: start free on Insight Timer, and only pay for Calm or Headspace if you discover you specifically want their sleep catalog or guided curriculum.
Bottom line
Insight Timer is the best value in meditation and the obvious first download for anyone unwilling to pay. If you need more structure or premium sleep content, layer in Headspace or Calm later.
Want a daily positivity practice in your own voice? Selfpause lets you record personalized affirmations, layer them with calming music, and keep them on your lock screen.

Frequently asked questions
Is Insight Timer really free?+
Yes. The core library of tens of thousands of guided meditations and the timer are free forever. Member Plus is optional and adds courses, downloads, and advanced features.
Insight Timer or Calm?+
Insight Timer for free breadth and variety; Calm for premium sleep content and a more curated, polished experience.
Is it good for beginners?+
It can be, but the volume is overwhelming. Beginners who want a clear path may prefer Headspace, then graduate to Insight Timer’s library.
What is Member Plus?+
The paid tier (about $59.99/year) that unlocks structured courses, offline downloads, and advanced player features. The free tier remains fully usable without it.
