Calm is the easiest app to recommend to someone who mainly wants to sleep better and unwind. Its Sleep Stories and production quality are unmatched. It is not the deepest meditation curriculum, and the free tier is thin — but for relaxation and sleep, nothing else feels this premium.

Calm launched in 2012 and, alongside Headspace, defined the modern meditation-app category. Where Headspace leans into structured mindfulness courses, Calm has always positioned itself a little wider: meditation, yes, but also sleep, relaxation, music, and celebrity-narrated bedtime stories.
That sleep focus is what most people come for. "Sleep Stories" — soothing tales read by voices like Matthew McConaughey and Harry Styles — are the feature that made Calm famous, and they remain the single best reason to download it.
