A teacher who teaches meditation is assumed to have knowledge of the subject matter and directs the student’s learning process. The teacher also answers the student’s questions. A teacher is a great source of information, and student often looks to the teacher for the answers to their questions. However, a good teacher should be able to offer knowledge that is both relevant and accessible to the student.

Pema

Pema

Pema Chodron was born in New York City, but she spent most of her formative years on a farm in rural New Jersey. In the early 1980s, she became ill with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Through homeopathy and a healthier diet, she was able to heal herself. Later, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, to be closer to her teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Her early spiritual training was inspired by a trip to Europe, where she met Lama Chime Rinpoche.

The name Pema is a Tibetan word that means “Lotus Lamp of the Teachings.” Pema Chodron became an ordained Buddhist nun in 1981 and teaches meditation in everyday life. She studied under Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and is currently studying with Sakyong Mipham and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche.

Eventually, Pema Chodron became the director of Gampo Abbey, the first Tibetan monastery in North America that welcomed Westerners. Despite her increasingly busy schedule, Pema Chodron continues to deepen her practice. In fact, she has increased her time in solitary retreat under the guidance of Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche.

Pema Chodron’s method is called “befriending meditation.” Instead of trying to achieve a transcendent heavenly state, the approach teaches acceptance of the self. Rather, it teaches openness, tolerance, and love, among other things. In addition, the technique promotes peace, maturity, and nonviolence.

She now has her own studio in New York City, and she offers her classes online as well.

There are a variety of styles of meditation, each with different benefits. One style focuses on giving the body deep rest while healing the body of stress and anxiety. Another style is called mindfulness meditation, which originated from monastic practice and involves deliberate focus. It improves one’s awareness of the present moment and reduces dependency on external objects.
